Veteran Hollywood actor John Amos, known for his memorable roles in Coming to America and the 1970s sitcom Good Times, has passed away at 84.
His son, Kelly Christopher Amos, announced on Tuesday that Amos died of natural causes on August 21. In a heartfelt tribute, Kelly spoke of his deep sorrow, emphasizing his father’s generous spirit and the lasting impact he had on fans around the world.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold and he was loved world over.
“Many fans consider him as their TV father. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor,” he announced.
John Amos, a former Colorado State University football player with training camp experience for the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, made a successful transition into the entertainment industry.
He first gained attention as Gordy Howard, the weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. A native of New Jersey, Amos earned an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of the older Kunta Kinte in the iconic 1977 miniseries Roots. He also had a recurring role as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace on NBC’s The West Wing.
Amos’ film career began with Melvin Van Peebles’ 1971 classic Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. He later starred in Coming to America (1988) as the manager of a McDonald’s-like restaurant who hires Eddie Murphy’s character. Ironically, Amos had previously worked in McDonald’s training and appeared in a popular 1970s commercial for the chain.
