Iran launched 200 missiles at Israel on Tuesday night, including hypersonic weapons for the first time, according to state TV reports on Wednesday.
The barrage, which targeted three military bases near Tel Aviv and other sites, led Israel to vow retaliation against Tehran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed that 90% of the missiles hit their targets, while Israel reported intercepting most of the 180 missiles aimed at its territory.
Iran had revealed a hypersonic missile in June 2023, capable of traveling at speeds up to 15 times the speed of sound. Iranian officials described it as a tool for boosting deterrence and regional stability. Unlike conventional ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles fly at lower altitudes and are harder to intercept.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Iran’s missile strike a “big mistake,” which followed Israel’s recent killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The U.S. and Israel are discussing a joint response, and Iran has warned of retaliatory strikes on Israeli infrastructure if Tehran is attacked.
