The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thundery weather across the country from Thursday to Saturday.
In its weather outlook released on Wednesday, NiMet forecasted morning thunderstorms for the northern region on Thursday. The agency expects storms to affect parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna states, as well as areas in Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, and Kebbi later in the day.
In the North Central region, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in the Federal Capital Territory and parts of Niger, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, and Benue, with additional storms expected throughout most of the region later in the day.
In the southern region, morning thunderstorms are likely over parts of Ebonyi and Enugu states, with more widespread storms later.
On Friday, the northern region will see thunderstorms in Taraba State during the morning, followed by storms in Kaduna, Kebbi, and Adamawa states in the afternoon and evening.
In the North Central region, morning thunderstorms are forecasted for the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, and Nasarawa states, with additional storms expected later in the day. Similarly, thunderstorms are predicted for Abia, Imo, Enugu, Oyo, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states in the southern region during the morning, with further storms anticipated later.
On Saturday, the northern region will experience morning thunderstorms in Taraba and Adamawa states, with more storms expected later in Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Taraba, and Adamawa states.
In the North Central region, morning storms are forecasted for the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, and Nasarawa states, along with storms in Plateau and Nasarawa later in the day. The southern region can also expect thunderstorms throughout the morning and evening.
NiMet has warned of a high risk of urban flooding in major cities due to heavy rains and advises residents to steer clear of flood-prone areas. Strong winds may precede the rain in areas experiencing thunderstorms. The agency urges the public to follow safety advisories from relevant authorities and recommends that airline operators check for updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet for effective planning.
