Avoid Sentimental Criticism Of Okpoye- Group Warns

The Egbema Focus Group (EFG) has urged restraint against inflammatory remarks aimed at Hon. Spencer Okubo Okpoye, the commissioner representing the Ijaw ethnic nationalities on the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) board.

This call follows a critique from Comrade Williams Ayoromiegha Junior, a youth leader from the Ogulagha Kingdom, who attacked Commissioner Okpoye based on sentiment. The EFG asserts that Hon. Spencer is viewed as a valuable asset to DESOPADEC and an important representative for the Ijaw ethnic groups on the board.

Comr. Williams, the Ogulagha Kingdom Publicity Secretary, labeled the endorsement of Hon. Spencer Okubo Okpoye as a “wrong and unnecessary move,” claiming it is unpatriotic to his people. He emphasized that endorsements should be merit-based, reflecting the achievements of a leader. He added that Okpoye has yet to demonstrate the necessary qualities for endorsement, noting that the Ogulagha Kingdom has not felt the positive impact of DESOPADEC under his leadership.

Comrade Mingo Meshach Saya Ogumaka, also known as KingdomVoice, cautioned against tribal or kingdom biases when criticizing officials from other kingdoms within DESOPADEC. He highlighted the need for fairness and warned against selective criticism, where individuals from certain kingdoms attack officials from other areas while overlooking their own appointees’ accountability.

Mingo emphasized that all leaders should be assessed based on their performance and service to the community. He called for unity and constructive dialogue among different Ijaw kingdoms to ensure that those in authority serve the best interests of the entire Ijaw ethnic nationality, rather than being targets of biased attacks.

The group condemned the recent criticism as counterproductive, asserting that Okpoye has been striving to fulfill his responsibilities to the Ijaw people and serve effectively on the commission. They encouraged constructive dialogue over divisive rhetoric, advocating for collaboration among Ijaw youth to foster progress for the entire Ijaw ethnic community within DESOPADEC.

Mingo also noted that the Ogulagha Kingdom Youth Council endorsed Hon. Spencer Okubo Okpoye based on his merits and significant achievements as commissioner for the Ijaw ethnic nationalities on the DESOPADEC board. The council recognized Okpoye’s dedication to promoting the interests of the Ijaw people and his contributions to community development through the commission.

His tenure has led to notable advancements in addressing the needs of his constituents, and the Ogulagha Kingdom Youth Council believes that Okpoye’s performance validates his position. The endorsement underscores his commitment to ensuring that DESOPADEC continues to benefit Ijaw communities and highlights the importance of merit-based recognition in leadership roles.
