The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has urged Nigerians living near riverbanks along the River Benue Basin to relocate to safer areas immediately.
NIHSA Director General, Umar Mohammed, warned on Thursday that the River Benue has reached flood levels due to increased rainfall.
He also advised residents along the River Niger to move to safer locations, as the Kainji and Jebba Dam operators are managing floodwaters.
The NIHSA director encouraged Nigerians to cooperate with emergency management agencies and collaborate to strengthen resilience against flooding and reduce its impact.
The government recently advised Nigerians to move to safer areas following the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. This came after water from the overflowing Alau Dam claimed over 30 lives and destroyed thousands of homes in Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital.
In 2022, floods devastated several states, resulting in 665 deaths, displacing 2,437,411 people, and affecting 4,476,867, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). In 2023, floods impacted 159,157 people, claimed 28 lives, and displaced 48,168, with the release of water from the Lagdo Dam contributing to some cases.
For 2024, NEMA reported that floods between April and September affected 1,048,312 people, displaced 625,239, and caused 259 deaths.
