President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian motorists to choose between buying petrol at N1000 or opting for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) at N200. He made this statement during a meeting with NIPCO executives on Tuesday at the State House, Abuja, where he praised the company’s contributions to Nigeria’s energy transition.
Tinubu acknowledged NIPCO’s pivotal role in promoting the adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel, aligning with his administration’s goals of energy security and economic diversification. He stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing cleaner and more affordable energy solutions for Nigerians.
Tinubu also commended NIPCO’s support of the “Switch to CNG” campaign, which increased public awareness and provided affordable CNG conversion kits even before the official launch of the Presidential CNG Initiative. He emphasized the initiative’s role in reducing Nigeria’s dependence on petrol and lowering fuel costs for consumers.
“CNG, being a cleaner and more affordable fuel, reduces the carbon footprint and saves consumers significant fuel costs.
“Nigeria’s motorists can buy petrol at N1,000 per litre or equivalent gas per Standard Cubic Meter at N200.
“We have also introduced incentives for commercial motorists to convert from petrol to gas ‘free of cost,’” Tinubu said.
He reiterated his administration’s dedication to creating a favorable environment for private sector investments and expanding Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure to boost energy efficiency and drive economic growth.
Additionally, he urged NIPCO to maintain its innovative efforts in expanding CNG while aligning with the government’s broader objectives in the energy sector.
