Ahead of the approaching U.S. presidential election, ballot drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, have been set on fire in separate incidents, destroying hundreds of ballots.
Local authorities, suspecting coordination, are investigating the use of incendiary devices and have reported sightings of similar vehicles at both locations, potentially linking these attacks to an earlier ballot box incident in Vancouver on October 8. Washington’s Secretary of State, Steve Hobbs, denounced these acts as “terror” aimed at destabilizing the democratic process.
“I strongly denounce any acts of terror that aim to disrupt lawful and fair elections in Washington state,” Hobbs said in a statement.
He urged voters to verify the status of their ballots online. Voters whose ballots are marked “not received” can print a replacement or visit their local elections office to ensure their votes are counted.
With over 42 million ballots already cast across the nation, tensions are high as former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris gear up for a closely contested election.
In Washington and Oregon, where ballots are mailed to registered voters, returns can be made by mail or through secure drop boxes.
