The Nigerian government, via the Correctional Service, has announced an increase in the funds allocated for the feeding of inmates across the country.
Stephen Abene, the spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), stated that this change will be included in the proposed 2025 budget. He explained that the adjustment is intended to reflect current economic realities.
Abene noted that the daily feeding allowance would rise from N750 to N1,150, a government-approved initiative aimed at enhancing inmate welfare and addressing nutritional issues.
“The government recently approved N1150 for feeding per inmate from N750, which will be captured in the 2025 budget. This upward review is to meet up with the present economic reality,” he said.
It is worth noting that concerned Nigerians and various institutions have been advocating for an increase in inmates’ feeding allowances after the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) Controller General, Haliru Nababa, revealed that the daily food allowance for prisoners was just N750.
In contrast, the daily feeding allocation for each of the 900 dogs maintained by the service is N800.
Recently, a viral video surfaced from the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar, showcasing poorly prepared meals being served to inmates. The NCoS responded by stating that the conditions shown in the video do not represent the overall standards of care across facilities, though they confirmed that an investigation would be conducted.
Additionally, a recent report indicated that 12 inmates at the Keffi Medium Security Custodial Centre in Nasarawa State died in September 2024 due to an illness related to insufficient nutrition.
