Republican Congressional Ex-Candidate Arrested For Stealing Ballots In US

A former Republican congressional candidate has been arrested and charged with ballot theft during a voting system test in Madison County, Indiana, according to the Indiana State Police.

The incident occurred on October 3 when election officials tested four voting machines with 136 candidate ballots. During the test, officials noticed two ballots were missing, prompting an investigation that led to the former candidate’s arrest, as reported by Reuters. This event has raised concerns in a state where voter fraud is rare, especially given previous claims about election integrity from former President Donald Trump and some Republican allies.

Despite ongoing debates over electoral fraud in the U.S., courts have dismissed numerous lawsuits related to the 2020 election.

Reuters reports that Donald Trump continues to assert, falsely according to courts, that the 2020 election was stolen—a claim still backed by many Republicans in Congress.

In response, several states and counties have increased security measures. Police reported that surveillance footage showed Larry Savage, 51, a precinct committeeman, folding and pocketing two ballots after being briefed on the test’s legitimacy.

Following a search warrant, authorities found the missing ballots in Savage’s vehicle.

“We unequivocally condemn any form of criminal election interference. We appreciate law enforcement’s commitment to pursuing justice, and we will continue to monitor this situation as it develops,” stated Griffin Reid, communications director for the Indiana Republican Party.

The party has expressed a strong wish to keep Trump out of Washington, D.C., unless he is in court.

Meanwhile, Savage is facing charges of ballot tampering and theft, according to online records.

Currently, no defense attorney is listed for him, and he has been released on bond.

However, before surrendering to authorities on Tuesday morning, Savage declared his innocence, calling the charges exaggerated.

Savage previously ran for the Republican nomination in Indiana’s Fifth Congressional District but garnered less than 2% of the vote in the primary. Victoria Spartz, the district’s current representative, won the nomination and will face Democratic candidate Deborah Pickett in the upcoming election.
