Washington State’s Governor Jay Inslee has placed select National Guard members on standby in anticipation of potential election-related disturbances.
“This is strictly a precautionary measure,” Inslee’s office stated on Friday. Earlier in the week, incendiary devices were used to set fire to a ballot drop box in Vancouver, Washington, destroying hundreds of ballots. A similar incident was reported in Portland, Oregon.
Inslee, a Democrat, cited recent incidents and nationwide warnings from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security about threats to election infrastructure as reasons for the measure.
The National Guard, a state military force that serves both governors and the president, is often called upon during emergencies. The activated members will remain on standby from Monday through early Thursday.
While Election Day falls on Tuesday, millions have already cast their votes early.
