NiMet Predicts 3-Day Sunshine, Haziness From Thursday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast sunshine and haziness across the country from Thursday to Saturday.

In its weather outlook released on Wednesday in Abuja, NiMet predicted a sunny, hazy atmosphere over parts of Borno, Adamawa, and Taraba states on Thursday, accompanied by moderate dust haze.

The agency also forecasted localised horizontal visibility of 2km to 5km across the northern region during this period. In the North Central region, moderate dust haze with similar visibility is expected, while the southern region will experience a sunny and hazy atmosphere over the inland areas. The coast will see sunny skies with occasional clouds in the morning, but localised thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are anticipated in the afternoon and evening over Ogun, Lagos, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.

On Friday, moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility of 1km to 3km is expected over the northern region, with localised visibility potentially dropping below 1000m. The North Central region will continue to experience moderate dust haze with visibility ranging from 2km to 5km. In the southern region, a sunny and hazy atmosphere is expected over the inland, while the coast will see partly cloudy skies in the morning. Localised thunderstorms and moderate rains are forecast for the afternoon/evening over parts of Abia, Anambra, Imo, Ogun, Southern Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.

For Saturday, moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility of 2km to 5km is predicted in the northern region, with localised visibility dropping to 1,000m or less. The North Central region will continue to experience moderate dust haze, while the southern inland areas will remain sunny and hazy, with patches of cloud over the coast.

NiMet has urged the public to take precautions as dust particles are suspended in the atmosphere, advising those with asthma or other respiratory issues to be especially cautious. Strong winds may precede thunderstorms, so the agency recommends the public adhere to safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.

Additionally, NiMet advised airline operators to obtain specific weather reports for airports to aid in flight planning.
