Nigeria’s interim head coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has named 23 players for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
Among the selected players is Galatasaray’s star striker, Victor Osimhen, who missed the previous match against Libya due to injury.
Osimhen made a successful return to action, scoring in Galatasaray’s 3-0 victory over Antalyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig on October 19. He also netted the winning goal in the Istanbul derby against Besiktas on October 28. Real Sociedad’s Umar Sadiq also makes his return to the Super Eagles squad after an absence.
These qualifiers will be crucial as they represent the final rounds before the AFCON in Morocco next year. Nigeria will face Benin Republic on November 14 at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny, with the match scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Nigeria time. The Eagles will then take on Rwanda on November 18 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Currently, Nigeria leads Group D with 10 points, thanks to a controversial 3-0 win awarded by CAF after their match against Libya was abandoned. The Eagles refused to play after being stranded for hours at a remote Libyan airport, where they faced harsh conditions, including a lack of food and internet access. It took diplomatic intervention and social media pressure before they were allowed to leave Libya.
