The Nigeria Police Force has authoriSed constables to carry firearms while performing their duties, aiming to bolster the fight against insecurity nationwide.
Before certification, constables must complete training within two weeks, provided by the Special Protection Unit (SPU), Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), or Mobile Police Base. Assistant Inspector General of Police Benneth C. Igweh, Zone 7, Abuja, announced this during his official visit to Niger State on Thursday.
“Community policing is everyone’s responsibility, and we have therefore granted all police constables the authority to carry arms from now on,” Igweh stated. “They will undergo two weeks of training with SPU, CTU, or the Mobile Police Base to better equip them for their duties.”
Igweh stressed the crucial role of community involvement in combating crime, stating, “With crime increasing in various communities, every citizen now has the right to make arrests. If you see something, say something, and together with the police, the community will act.”
The AIG also announced an upcoming recruitment drive by the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen national security. Approved by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the recruitment will provide additional slots for Niger State and Abuja.
