For the first time, President Joe Biden has reportedly approved Ukraine’s use of U.S.-supplied long-range missiles to target locations inside Russia.
According to one U.S. official and three sources familiar with the decision, this marks a significant shift in U.S. policy as Biden nears the end of his presidency.
Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to end the war swiftly and expressed doubts about continued U.S. support, as reported by The Associated Press.
The decision follows North Korea’s deployment of thousands of troops to Russia to support President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
“As many as 12,000 North Korean troops have been sent to Russia,” according to U.S., South Korean, and Ukrainian assessments.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had long urged President Joe Biden to lift restrictions on targeting Russia, arguing that the U.S. ban limited Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.
Critics warned that such constraints could jeopardize Ukraine’s chances of winning the war.
Biden had resisted these calls, concerned about escalating tensions that might draw NATO into direct conflict with Russia.
However, North Korea’s troop deployment to Russia and a shifting momentum in Moscow’s favor influenced Biden’s decision.
Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump, set to take office in January, has suggested pressuring Ukraine to cede territory to Russia in pursuit of peace—a position that has alarmed Ukraine’s allies, who fear it could heavily favor Vladimir Putin.
North Korea has also provided Russia with substantial munitions to replenish its diminishing stockpiles, according to U.S. and South Korean intelligence.
