Trump’s Incoming Government May Ban Transgender Troops
The incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly planning to sign an executive order to discharge all transgender individuals from the U.S. military, according to Daily Mail.
The development has heightened concerns within the LGBTQ+ community.
The report alleges that state officials intend to classify transgender personnel as “unfit” to serve, citing medical grounds. This policy would extend beyond Trump’s previous military ban, which, during his first term, barred transgender individuals from enlisting while allowing current members to remain.
After Trump’s exit, President Joe Biden overturned the ban in 2021 through an executive order that reinstated the right for transgender individuals to serve openly. However, with Trump’s potential return to the White House, transgender rights in the U.S. military may face renewed challenges. The proposed policy would mandate the discharge of all transgender service members, regardless of their status, and could take effect as early as January 20 next year, Trump’s first day in office.
If signed, this directive could impact an estimated 15,000 transgender personnel actively serving in the U.S. military, sparking broader debate and contention over their future in service.
This development coincides with efforts in Congress to bar the first transgender lawmaker from using female restrooms in her workplace. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed support for policies rejecting transgender ideologies within the legislative branch.
“All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings — such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms — are reserved for individuals of that biological sex,” the speaker said in a statement last Wednesday.
“It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol. Women deserve women’s only spaces,” he added.
