The Delta State Local Government Councils Legislative Leaders’ Forum has called for improved salary structures and better welfare packages for Councillors across the 25 local government councils in the state.
Chairman of the forum, Hon. Samuel Ekpemupolo, made the request during a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, at the State Assembly Complex in Asaba.
Hon. Ekpemupolo emphasized that the current salary structure for Councillors is insufficient to meet the demands of the role and the economic realities in Nigeria. He, who also serves as the Leader of Warri South West Legislative Arm, argued that a fair salary increase would not only ensure financial stability for Councillors but also help them stay focused and committed to their duties.
Highlighting that Councillors are crucial to grassroots governance, serving as a primary link between the government and the people, Ekpemupolo stressed the need for an adjustment that reflects their critical role in local administration, especially as the cost of living rises.
He expressed gratitude to the Speaker for the opportunity to address important issues affecting Councillors and reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to supporting grassroots development, in line with the state government’s MORE agenda.
Ekpemupolo also appealed for advocacy and legislative support to establish a Car Loan Scheme for Councillors, allocate Constituency Projects, ensure the monthly payment of imprests, and set up Legislative Accounts in each local government council.
He emphasized that Councillors need to be adequately supported to help realize the vision of a prosperous and developed Delta State.
In response, Speaker Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor congratulated the leaders for their positions as presiding officers in their respective local councils and promised continued collaboration between the State Assembly and local government legislators. He assured that Delta State has consistently supported local government autonomy.
Accompanied by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowovwo and Majority Leader Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, the Speaker pledged the State Assembly’s commitment to providing the necessary support for the success of grassroots legislators. He urged them to collaborate with their local council Chairmen for effective governance, which would significantly impact the state’s progress under the PDP-led government.
The Speaker also promised to engage with the Chairmen of the local councils to address the forum’s concerns and commended the leaders for visiting the State Assembly.
The visit concluded with the presentation of souvenirs.
