Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has expressed concerns that the proposed Tax Reform bills could lead to setbacks for the North and Nigeria as a whole.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Zulum noted that the reforms appear to primarily benefit Lagos State. He added that although there were claims the bill might disadvantage Lagos, they do not wish for the state to face any adverse effects.
According to Zulum: “We rejected the tax reform bill; it will bring backwardness to the North, and not only to the North, but also to the South East, South South, and South West. Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo will also have problems; it will only benefit Lagos.”
He urged President Bola Tinubu to revisit the Tax reform bills in light of the fact that he received 60% of his votes from the northern region.
The governor said: “He should not pay attention to voices suggesting that the northern population does not support him; that perception is inaccurate. He said what they want is for him to withdraw the Tax reform bills.”
