The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has acknowledged the widespread corruption within Nigeria’s justice system.
Speaking on Thursday at the 2024 Annual Lecture and Award Ceremony hosted by the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), ICPC Chairman Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, described corruption as a persistent issue undermining all sectors and institutions in the country.
Aliyu highlighted how corruption hampers policy decisions and emphasized the challenges faced by the justice system, including institutional weaknesses, inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, limited human resources, and socio-cultural factors.
He added that, “The widespread corruption within the justice system, including bribery, influence peddling and attitudinal challenges are more fundamental and daunting.
“I dare say that the justice sector remains a focal point of concern, particularly regarding bribery involving stakeholders in the justice sector, and despite limited public contact, judicial officials exhibit relatively high bribery prevalence, hence the need for targeted anti-corruption measures in this sector.”
