Ex-female Presidential Candidate Prof Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies condoles bereaved families, Ooni’s Ex Wife, the Director of Agidigbo FM, Ibadan, Oyo State, Oriyomi Hamzat and Oyo State Government at the heat of badan tragedy.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives at the Ibadan funfair. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the victims. The death of 35 minors without any doubt is a devastating blow to our nation, and I can only imagine the pain and grief that the families must be going through,” she stated.
As a former presidential candidate, I’ve always advocated for the welfare and safety of our citizens, especially children. This tragedy is a stark reminder of our poor Nigerian economic situation, lack of poverty alleviation and unavailable seasonal palliatives by the government.
I urge the authorities to kindly conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. We must also come together as a nation to support the families of the victims and work towards preventing such tragedies in the future.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God grant their families the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss. In the future, such events will need proper planning, organization, and crowd control measures in public events.
It was reported that, “HM Queen Evang. Silekunola Naomi was on Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Ibadan, where she revealed plans for her foundation to host a Christmas funfair catering to 5,000 children (ages 0-13) at a secondary school. Ibadan is a massive city with millions of residents, and Agidigbo FM is the most-listened-to station so it’s understandable.
However sadly, the event ended tragically. Reports confirm a stampede occurred, leading to the hospitalization of several people and the unfortunate death of numbers.
Given the current economic hardship in the country, it was predictable that a large crowd would attend. Some reports stated that people slept at the venue overnight, and by 6 a.m., the 5,000 tickets had already been distributed, yet more people kept arriving.
While it is difficult to blame Queen Naomi for her good intentions, this incident was avoidable. In the future, events like these require detailed planning and safety measures. Security and medical personnel should have been on-site, and a closed venue would have provided better crowd control.
The management of Agidigbo FM, Ibadan, Oyo State founded by Oriyomi Hamzat has expressed sorrow over the stampede that occurred during a children’s funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
In a press release signed by the station’s director of programmes Olayinka AbdulWahab on Wednesday, Agidigbo FM clarified that it was not the organiser of the event but a media partner responsible for its promotion.
