FG, Transporters Unveil 50% Subsidised Fares To 12 States

The Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has published a revised transport fare list for 12 states, reflecting the Federal Government’s 50% transport palliative initiative.

RTEAN is one of five transport unions and companies collaborating with the government on the scheme. Others include the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Association of Luxurious Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON), Good is Good Motors (GIGM), and the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO). These groups signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government to ease travel costs for Nigerians between December 24, 2024, and January 5, 2025.

Since the Ministry of Transportation launched the palliative program to mitigate holiday transport costs, GIGM and RTEAN have been the most active participants. The initiative also includes free rail transport for citizens, which began on December 20, 2024.

The fare list, confirmed by RTEAN’s National General Secretary, Yusuf Ibrahim, indicates that trips like Abuja to Asaba or Akwa now cost N17,500, while Abuja to Abakaliki or Dutse costs N12,500 and N7,500, respectively. Lagos to Benin is N7,500; Lagos to Onitsha, Katsina, or Lafia is N15,000; Lagos to Bauchi or Jigawa is N12,500, and Lagos to Kebbi or Yola is N20,000.

The RTEAN secretary stated that the listed routes were assigned by the government and that the union has been implementing the palliative scheme in line with directives from the transport ministry.

Ibrahim said, “If you visit any of the designated packs, you will find out that our buses are either present or have left for their state of destination.

“Just as seen on that list, those are parts of the routes given to us and there are many buses we have been ordered to load daily. In some states, we have nine buses, some 12 buses. Once we get to that quota, other persons will board the vehicles at normal prices.

“Left to us we would be interested to ply the entire country but we can only act in accordance to their dictates.”
