A 35-year-old suspected thief narrowly escaped being lynched by a mob on Wednesday in the Okumagba area of Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, after allegedly stealing a church keyboard.
The mob, after severely beating him, placed a tyre around his neck and paraded him through Willie Street to Okumagba Avenue. The suspect sustained head injuries and serious bodily harm as the mob prepared to set him ablaze.
A team of Mobile Policemen arrived just in time to rescue the suspect, taking him to the Police “B” Division. They assured onlookers that the suspect would reveal the identities of his gang members.
However, the mob, growing increasingly agitated, expressed frustration over the police intervention and lamented the delay in meting out jungle justice, which they claimed would deter others.
As of the time of this report, the suspect was in police custody.
