The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has announced that the new minimum wage will be reviewed in less than two years.
Speaking on Thursday in Umuahia during a meeting with labour leaders in Abia, Onyejeocha emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to fulfilling his promises to Nigerian workers by ensuring the minimum wage is reviewed every three years.
“We won’t allow the minimum wage review to take forever. It used to take about five years, but now, in three years—which is less than two years—we will review it again,” Onyejeocha said, adding that the decision has been documented.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tinubu approved a N70,000 minimum wage in July 2024, with a pledge to review it regularly every three years.
Onyejeocha, an Abia native, said she met with the labour leaders, whom she described as her constituents, to wish them well after spending the Christmas and New Year holidays in the state.
She reminded them that labour is a vital part of governance, tasked with fostering stability and peace not only in workplaces but also across the nation.
