The National Assembly, comprising the Senate and House of Representatives, has threatened to exclude the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) from the 2025 budget proposal.
Lawmakers criticized the board for failing to remit N4 billion to the federation account despite receiving a N6 billion grant from the Federal Government in 2024.
According to the National Assembly, the Federal Government should cease granting funds to JAMB and instead allow the board to operate solely on its internally generated revenue.
This stance was taken following a presentation by JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, before the committee chaired by Senator Sani Musa (APC, Niger East) during an interactive session on revenue projections of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) for 2025.
Prof. Oloyede explained that JAMB remitted N4 billion to the consolidated revenue fund in 2024 while receiving a N6 billion grant. However, this explanation drew criticism from committee members, including Abiodun Faleke and Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo), who questioned why a self-sustaining agency continues to receive federal allocations.
“You remitted N4billion and got N6billion from the federal government. Why not keep the N4billion and we stop the government from funding JAMB,” the Chairman, House Committee on Finance, Faleke queried.
On his part, Oshiomhole queried: “You spent N1.1billion on meals and refreshment. Are you being freely fed by the government? What this means is that you are spending the money you generate from poor students, many of them orphans.
“You also spent N850million on security, cleaning and fumigation in 2024.What did you fumigate? Is it mosquitoes that took all this money?
The former Edo State governor criticized JAMB for spending N600 million on local travels and challenged Oloyede to justify expenditures such as N6.5 billion on local training, N1 billion on staff housing schemes, and N75 million on vehicle maintenance and refurbishment, among other costs.
