EndBadGovernance Protest: Police Gives Amnesty International 7 Days To Retract Report

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Amnesty International to retract and publicly apologise for its report on the #EndBadGovernance protests, failing which legal action will be pursued.

In November 2024, Amnesty International published a report titled ‘Bloody August: Violent suppression of #EndBadGovernance protests by the Nigerian government’. The report alleged that at least 24 protesters were killed, and 1,200 detained during nationwide protests held from August 1-10, 2024.

In response, the police launched an investigation through a special committee set up by the Inspector-General of Police in December 2024, which concluded that Amnesty’s claims were “untrue.”

On Tuesday, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police, disclosed that a letter demanding retraction and an apology was sent to Amnesty International on January 6, 2025.

“The NPF highlights that throughout the protests, the police demonstrated restraint and professionalism, even amidst intense provocation and violent assaults, following global best practices and applying minimal force when needed,” Adejobi remarked.

He emphasized that the police operate professionally, reflecting their commitment to maintaining law and order while protecting peaceful protesters.

According to Adejobi, individuals with criminal motives who attempted to exploit the protests were apprehended and dealt with in accordance with the law.

He expressed concern that Amnesty International’s report undermined the trust and confidence the police had worked diligently to build with the community.

“This deceptive publication tarnishes the organisation’s reputation and disheartens its officers who put their lives on the line to safeguard the public,” the statement stated.
