The Ijaw Youth Network (IYN) has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Dr. Dennis Burutu Otuaro, for their dedication to the development of the Niger Delta region.
The youth group highlighted the recent award of scholarships to over 1,700 students as a significant milestone, praising the initiative’s transparency and fairness. In a statement by IYN President Frank Ebikabo and Secretary Federal Ebiaridor, they hailed President Tinubu’s decision to retain the PAP and appoint Dr. Otuaro as a strategic step yielding remarkable progress in peace and stability in the region.
“President Tinubu has demonstrated exceptional foresight by sustaining the PAP and entrusting its leadership to Dr. Otuaro, whose administration has driven commendable achievements,” the statement read.
The leaders underscored the historic scope of the scholarship scheme, which includes opportunities for overseas master’s programs and comprehensive support covering tuition, accommodation, and living expenses. They emphasized that this initiative reflects a genuine commitment to addressing critical challenges in the Niger Delta.
“Had previous administrations shown a similar dedication to human capital development, our region might have avoided the path of militancy,” they remarked.
Under Dr. Otuaro’s leadership, the PAP has deployed 1,700 students to local and international institutions, marking the largest single cohort in the programme’s history. Other notable achievements include sending four Niger Delta indigenes to South Africa for specialized aviation training and training 98 youths in maritime skills at the Joemarine Institute.
“Dr. Otuaro’s leadership reflects a profound understanding of the region’s historical grievances, and his deliberate initiatives are creating lasting impacts,” said Ebikabo and Ebiaridor.
Despite these successes, the IYN called on President Tinubu to increase funding for the PAP, noting that additional resources would enhance the programme’s reach and sustainability.
The statement concluded with the IYN reaffirming its support for the Tinubu administration and Dr. Otuaro’s leadership, pledging to collaborate with the federal government in promoting sustainable peace and development in the Niger Delta.
