President Bola Tinubu, on Friday, expressed gratitude to members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum for unanimously endorsing the four Tax Reform Bills currently under review by the National Assembly.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended the governors for demonstrating “bold leadership and commitment to fostering unity among leaders nationwide.”
The statement, titled “President Tinubu Commends Nigeria Governors for Supporting Tax Reform Initiatives,” highlighted that the governors’ consensus transcended regional, ethnic, and political divides to promote Nigeria’s development.
According to PUNCH Online, the governors had, on Thursday, backed Tinubu’s tax reform proposals, including the contentious shift to a derivation-based VAT model.
The President described the consultation between the Governors’ Forum and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy as “an exemplary display of cooperation between the Federal and State governments.”
He singled out Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the Governors’ Forum, for his pivotal role in securing bipartisan support for the transformative tax bills aimed at revitalizing the economy and improving Nigeria’s investment landscape. Tinubu also acknowledged the efforts of the Progressive Governors Forum, the Northern Governors Forum, and other stakeholders in resolving the controversy surrounding the bills.
The President emphasized that the Tax Reform Bills are designed to prioritize the welfare of the poor, serve national interests, enhance economic competitiveness, and attract investments. He underscored the need to modernize Nigeria’s outdated tax laws to achieve these objectives.
“The President notes that the dialogue between the NGF and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform highlights the power of constructive conversation in resolving differences.
“President Tinubu regards the governors as vital contributors to nation-building and affirms his commitment to partnering with them to promote economic growth, national harmony, peace, and stability,” the statement read.
The President also encouraged other stakeholders with ideas and suggestions for refining the Tax Bills to engage with the ongoing legislative process at the National Assembly.
Tinubu urged the National Assembly to expedite the legislative process for these crucial bills so that the country can swiftly reap the benefits of the reforms.
