Disagreements In NASS During Lokpobiri’s Budget Defence

Tensions erupted at the National Assembly on Friday as Senators and House Representatives disrupted the 2025 budget defense session for the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

The commotion unfolded during a presentation by the Minister of Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, and the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo.

Lawmakers expressed outrage over the absence of budget documents ahead of the session, leading one enraged legislator to confront the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas) directly.

In response, Lokpobiri apologised for the oversight, attributing it to an unintentional mix-up and reaffirming the ministry’s respect for the National Assembly. Ekpo, during his presentation, highlighted the Federal Government’s focus on addressing explosions in the petroleum sector and advancing the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner energy alternative.

He also revealed the disbursement of ₦222 billion to six companies to bolster midstream and downstream infrastructure for nationwide CNG deployment.

The proposed 2025 budget for the Ministry of Petroleum Resources is ₦4.25 billion, covering personnel, overhead, and capital expenditures. Additionally, the session reviewed the ministry’s 2024 budget performance, which showcased progress in oil and gas sector reforms, including efforts to promote modular refineries and enhance domestic refining capacity.
