President Donald Trump has signed an executive order instructing U.S. government agencies to cease issuing citizenship documents for babies born in the United States to parents without legal status.
The order, titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” was signed just hours after Trump assumed office. It directs federal agencies to deny U.S. citizenship to children born in the U.S. if their mothers are in the country unlawfully or on temporary visas, and their fathers are neither U.S. citizens nor lawful permanent residents.
Taking effect on February 19, the order will bar children born on U.S. soil from obtaining citizenship, including passports, unless at least one parent is a U.S. citizen or green card holder.
This birthright citizenship order is part of a broader set of immigration policies aimed at rolling back Biden-era initiatives and intensifying border security measures. Analysts suggest the directive is likely to trigger significant legal challenges.
