Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has empowered 2,386 women by distributing 7,158 goats as part of an economic empowerment initiative.
The goats were distributed during the launch of the second phase of the Livestock Fattening Programme under the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project. In a statement on Tuesday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, stated that the initiative aims to support livestock entrepreneurship among vulnerable groups by providing livestock to women across the state’s 44 local government areas.
Each beneficiary will receive three goats, according to the state government.
The governor further revealed that future phases of the programme will include the distribution of 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams to women and youths across the state. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling poverty through innovative and inclusive initiatives, emphasizing the programme’s role in empowering women and youths while fostering economic self-reliance.
Governor Yusuf encouraged beneficiaries to manage the livestock responsibly and remain accountable to ensure the programme’s success.
“This initiative is not merely about distributing livestock but creating a sustainable economic model that uplifts communities and reduces reliance on government assistance,” the governor stated.
“This groundbreaking initiative, worth N2.3 billion, underscores the administration’s focus on sustainable development and empowering communities to drive economic growth from the grassroots.
“By integrating women and youth into the agricultural value chain, the program aims to enhance household income and reduce dependency on government aid.”
