The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, has called for Africa to be granted a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, highlighting Nigeria’s capability to represent the continent on the global stage.
This stance was conveyed in a statement released by Alkasim Abdulkadir, the minister’s Special Assistant on Media and Communication Strategy, on Wednesday in Abuja. Tuggar expressed these views during a panel discussion titled “Africa’s Momentum” at the ongoing World Economic Forum (WEF) summit in Davos, Switzerland, which runs from January 20 to 24, 2025. He criticized Africa’s exclusion from the Security Council, stressing that nearly 60 percent of the Council’s resolutions pertain to African issues, yet the continent lacks a permanent seat.
Tuggar further cited decisions made by the Council, such as the deforestation law that restricts the purchase of products from deforested lands in Africa, which he argued have adverse effects on the continent. He also pointed out the lack of accountability for companies contributing to deforestation in Africa.
The panel discussion, moderated by Bronwen Maddox, Director of Chatham House, included key participants such as Mohammed Nafti, Tunisia’s Foreign Minister; Therese Wagner, Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo; and Matia Kasaija, Uganda’s Minister of Finance.
Discussions covered Africa’s role in global governance and the importance of the upcoming 2025 G20 summit, which will be hosted in South Africa.
Tuggar also elaborated on Nigeria’s foreign policy direction under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing the country’s strategic autonomy and nonalignment principles. He noted that the G20 summit in South Africa presents an opportunity to push for Nigeria’s membership in the group.
“Nigeria’s involvement in South Africa’s liberation struggle and its ongoing support for South Africa solidifies our ties,” Tuggar noted.
