Republican Congressman Andy Ogles has proposed a bill to amend the U.S. Constitution, allowing former President Donald Trump to seek a third term.
Ogles submitted the resolution on Thursday, arguing that Trump is uniquely capable of addressing the nation’s challenges and restoring its global standing. “He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness. He must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal,” Ogles stated.
Under the 22nd Amendment, no individual may be elected president more than twice.
Ogles added, “We must provide Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.”
Trump, who had previously ruled out a third-term bid, joked about the idea after his 2024 victory, saying, “Unless you say, ‘he’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’”
Congressman Ogles commended Trump’s executive actions during his second term, highlighting policies on border security, energy production, gender identity regulations, and the U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization.
The 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms, was ratified in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four-term presidency from 1933 to 1945. Roosevelt’s extended tenure raised concerns over excessive executive power and reinforced George Washington’s tradition of serving only two terms.
Despite the Republicans’ narrow majority in the House, the proposed amendment would need broad bipartisan backing and approval from three-fourths of the states to become law.
