South Korean Airplane Catches Fire, Passengers Evacuated

A passenger aircraft’s tail caught fire at South Korea’s Gimhae International Airport in Busan on Tuesday, prompting the evacuation of all 176 people on board, according to Yonhap News Agency.

The Air Busan flight, bound for Hong Kong, caught fire around 10:30 p.m. local time (1330 GMT). Yonhap reported that 169 passengers and seven crew members evacuated using inflatable slides. The cause of the fire remains unclear.

One person sustained injuries, but no further details were provided. Busan’s fire authorities were unavailable for comment when contacted by AFP.

South Korea recently experienced its worst aviation disaster when a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crash-landed in Muan last month, killing 179 of the 181 people on board.

Flightradar24 identifies Air Busan’s fleet as exclusively Airbus aircraft.
