Palestine, Jordan, Egypt Reject Trump’s Proposal To Relocate Gazans

Leaders from Palestine, Jordan, and Egypt have firmly opposed a proposal by former US President Donald Trump to relocate Palestinians from Gaza. Trump’s recent remarks suggested Jordan and Egypt could take in displaced Gazans, a notion swiftly rejected by the region’s leaders.

Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas denounced any attempts to displace Palestinians, vowing they “will not abandon their land and holy sites.” He warned against repeating the mass displacements of 1948 and 1967, calling them historical catastrophes.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi reaffirmed his country’s stance, stating, “Jordan is for Jordanians, and Palestine is for Palestinians.” Egypt’s Foreign Ministry echoed this position, emphasizing Cairo’s support for Palestinians’ right to remain in their homeland.

Trump, speaking on Saturday, said he had discussed the idea with Jordan’s King Abdullah II and planned to raise it with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi. He described Gaza as a “demolition site” and suggested relocating its population either temporarily or permanently.

Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, pledged to resist any forced displacement. Hamas official Bassem Naim stated that Palestinians have historically “foiled such projects” and would do so again.

The proposal comes amid a fragile ceasefire in Gaza following 15 months of war triggered by Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The conflict has devastated Gaza’s infrastructure, with UN estimates indicating nearly 70% of buildings have been damaged or destroyed.

Despite widespread international opposition, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich welcomed Trump’s proposal, calling it a “great idea” that could offer Gazans “a better life.”

Tensions remain high, with Israel maintaining movement restrictions in Gaza and linking the return of displaced Palestinians to northern areas with the release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas.
