Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on African nations to view former US President Donald Trump’s foreign aid cuts as a wake-up call.
Speaking at the 2025 East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit, Kenyatta stressed the need for self-reliance and better resource management. He downplayed the backlash over Trump’s decision, urging African countries to break free from foreign aid dependence.
“I saw some people the other day crying about Trump’s decision to halt foreign aid to African nations. Why are they crying? It is not your government and it is definitely not your country. He has no reason to give you anything, you do not pay taxes in America,” Kenyatta stated.
He further urged African nations to reassess their priorities: “This is a wake-up call to Africa to ask what we can do to help ourselves instead of crying. We should ask ourselves what we are going to do to support ourselves. It is time for us to use our resources for the right thing because we are the ones using these resources for the wrong things.”
Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, all US agencies overseeing foreign development aid have been instructed to halt fund distribution.
As a result, the US government has suspended financial support for HIV treatment programs in Nigeria and other developing nations.
This move has triggered a 90-day pause in disbursements from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a US initiative that funds HIV/AIDS treatment across Africa and beyond.
