Abuja Court Sentences Two Lovers To 3 Months For Adultery

A Gwagwalada Magistrates’ Court in Abuja sentenced two individuals, Mohammed Nazifi, 30, and Bilkisu Ibrahim, 25, to three months in prison each for committing adultery.

The two were charged with a single count of adultery, to which they both pleaded guilty. Nazifi, a married man with young children, requested leniency, asking the court to consider his family responsibilities. Ibrahim, a mother of a three-year-old child and caretaker for her elderly mother, also appealed for mercy.

Magistrate Olatunji Oladunmoye had previously remanded the defendants to allow them time to present a character witness, but they failed to do so. As a result, the court proceeded with the sentencing. Each defendant was given the option to pay a N25,000 fine instead of serving the full three-month term.

The magistrate emphasized that the punishment aimed to reform rather than punish the individuals and would serve as a deterrent for others considering similar actions.

Prosecutor Dabo Yakubu informed the court that the case had been reported by Dayabe Abdullahi from Chibiri village, Kuje, Abuja, on January 16. Yakubu revealed that the couple had conspired to engage in sexual intercourse and confessed to the offense. The crime violated sections 387 and 388 of the Penal Code, which criminalize extramarital sex under customary law.

“If the man or woman has sexual intercourse with anyone other than his spouse, he/she is guilty of adultery and shall be punished with imprisonment for a term. The term may extend to two years or with fine or with both,” he said.
