Court Sentences Bayelsa Police Commissioner To Prison Over Contempt

A High Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has sentenced the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, to prison for failing to comply with a court order.

The ruling stems from a judgment delivered on November 26, 2016, in suit number YHC/210/2014, which upheld a Court of Appeal decision in appeal suit number CA/PH/170/2018. The judgment favored nine families from the Yenizue-gene community in a land dispute over a parcel in Asam, currently serving as the operational base for the state security outfit, Operation Doo-Akpo.

The affected families—Fabiri, Ayoko, Aku, Ugbon, Obediah, Sampson, and Boye—had filed committal proceedings against the police chief in 2022 for ignoring court directives. On December 27, 2024, Honorable Justice R. Ajuwa ruled to imprison the Commissioner for contempt.

The police have failed to appear in court or challenge the rulings, leading to the enforcement of the committal order in 2024. The Inspector General of Police has been urged to ensure compliance with the judgments issued by the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt on June 10, 2021, or risk further legal action.

Speaking at a press briefing, the claimants’ lead counsel, Barrister Ukunbiriowei Saiyou, condemned the unlawful occupation of the land by the police and Operation Doo-Akpo since Saipem vacated the property. Despite the court’s rulings, the families have been denied access to their land.

In a joint statement, community representatives, Chief Honest Boye Wilson and Hon. Manager Fabiri, expressed their commitment to seeking justice through legal means while maintaining peace.

When contacted for comment, the spokesperson for the state police command, ASP Musa Mohammed, said: “The Bayelsa Police Command is not aware of this. But if you have the court document, please kindly send it to me on WhatsApp for proper findings.”
