Aston Villa Sign Rashford On Loan From Man Utd

Aston Villa secured Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United for the remainder of the season, ending the England international’s absence under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

Once a fan favorite at United, Rashford last played for his boyhood club on December 12 and had expressed a desire for a “new challenge” earlier this season. The 27-year-old was linked with AC Milan and Barcelona, but his reported £300,000-a-week ($372,000) wages deterred potential suitors. According to Sky Sports, Villa will cover at least 75% of his salary, increasing to 90% based on performance-related bonuses. The club also has the option to make the deal permanent for £40 million at the season’s end.

“I had interest from several clubs, but choosing Aston Villa was easy—I admire their style of play and the manager’s vision,” Rashford said in a club statement. “I just want to play football and can’t wait to get started. I wish Manchester United all the best for the rest of the season.”

Villa strengthened their attack after selling Colombian striker Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr for a reported £64 million on Friday.

Unai Emery’s team has reached the Champions League last 16 and remains in contention for a top-four finish next season. They currently sit eighth in the Premier League, eight points ahead of 13th-placed United.

Rashford, who has netted 138 goals in 426 appearances for United, has won the Europa League, two FA Cups, and two League Cups. However, his commitment and work ethic in training have come under scrutiny since Amorim’s arrival in November. Following last weekend’s 1-0 win at Fulham, the Portuguese coach controversially stated he would rather include United’s 63-year-old goalkeeping coach, Jorge Vital, in the squad than Rashford.
