The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N4.8 billion for HIV treatment, ensuring continued care despite reduced foreign assistance. The decision follows the U.S. government’s plan to suspend financial aid for HIV programs in various countries.
Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, disclosed this after a Council meeting led by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He stated that the funds would be disbursed over four months to support HIV patients, even as international contributions decline.
Addressing concerns over the U.S. policy shift affecting HIV and tuberculosis aid, Pate emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its health sector through domestic financing. A committee—including representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Budget, Defence, Environment, and the Nigeria Governors Forum—has been established to develop a sustainability plan.
