Telecom Tariff Hike: FG Meets NLC  Leaders Over Tomorrow’s Protest

To prevent the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its civil society allies from proceeding with a nationwide protest against the 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs, the Federal Government has summoned labour leaders for a meeting today.

Vanguard learned that the meeting will also address the NLC’s opposition to the N8 billion budgetary allocation for electricity bill sensitization, which the union has condemned as wasteful and corrupt. A source from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), which is hosting the discussion, revealed that the meeting is set for 5 p.m.

According to the source, the session will serve as a “dialogue on matters of national interest affecting Nigerian workers.” It will be an inter-ministerial meeting led by the SGF to resolve issues surrounding the telecom tariff hike, which the NLC and its allies have strongly rejected.

Meanwhile, the NLC is actively mobilizing workers for a mass protest scheduled for February 4 against the government-approved tariff increase.

The meeting will also deliberate on the proposed N8 billion allocation in the 2025 budget for electricity bill sensitization. Due to prior commitments, including a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday, the government scheduled the session for the evening.

Sources within the NLC confirmed that its leaders would attend the meeting to hear the government’s position but maintained their firm stance against the tariff hike.

Last Thursday, the NLC instructed its affiliate unions and state councils to ensure full mobilization for the planned protest against the telecom tariff increase.
