Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, outclassed compatriots Davido, Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Asake to win the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammys on Sunday.
Her hit song Love Me Jeje triumphed over Yemi Alade’s Tomorrow, Asake & Wizkid’s MMS, Chris Brown’s Sensational featuring Davido & Lojay, and Burna Boy’s Higher.
A remake of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 classic, Love Me Jeje has garnered global acclaim since its release last April. Tems’ win marks back-to-back victories for women in this newly introduced category, following South African singer Tyla’s inaugural win last year with Water.
However, Tems fell short in her other two nominations, losing Best R&B Song to SZA’s Saturn and Best Global Music Album to Matt B & the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Alkebulan II.
