The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has forecasted heavy rainfall between May and June 2025, potentially causing flash floods in coastal cities.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced this while presenting the 2025 annual climate prediction in Abuja.
He stated that rainfall onset would be delayed in northern and central states, including Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kwara. Conversely, early rainfall is expected in southern states such as Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, and parts of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi, while other regions will experience normal onset.
An earlier-than-usual end to the rainy season is predicted in parts of Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Ekiti, and Ondo. Meanwhile, a delayed end is expected in areas like Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu.
Temperature trends indicate above-average warmth across the country, with January, February, March, and May seeing higher-than-normal daytime and nighttime temperatures. However, April is expected to be generally cooler, except for the northern states, where temperatures may still be above normal.
Keyamo urged individuals involved in rainfed agriculture and other weather-dependent activities to consult the Seasonal Climate Change document or NIMET for detailed information on rainfall patterns.
