Oyetola’s Team Arrives Bayelsa For $3bn Agge Deep Seaport Project

A high-powered steering and project delivery team from the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has arrived in Bayelsa to collaborate with the state government in finalizing plans for the commencement of the multi-billion-dollar Agge Deep Seaport in Ekeremor Local Government Area.

This project aims to enhance maritime infrastructure and alleviate congestion at Nigeria’s ports. The Agge Deep Seaport, a joint public-private partnership (PPP) initiative between the Bayelsa State Government, the Federal Government, and a major private investor, is expected to boost job creation, stimulate economic activities, and attract investment. Once operational, it will position Bayelsa as a strategic transport hub for the North and South-East regions.

According to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, efforts are underway to strengthen port infrastructure and connectivity across Nigeria. This includes the development of key maritime projects such as the Badagry, Ondo, Ibom, and Bonny Deep Seaports.

In October 2024, the Federal Government inaugurated the Ogun State-owned Gateway Inland Dry Port in Ewekoro, underscoring the ministry’s broader strategy to position Nigeria as a major player in the blue economy. Oyetola emphasized that developing inland dry ports is crucial to expanding the nation’s maritime capacity.

Sources familiar with the Agge project revealed that the steering committee’s visit to Bayelsa follows a directive from the minister to fast-track its implementation. This move is seen as a strategic effort to bridge Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure gap.

During a courtesy visit to Oyetola in Abuja in October 2024, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri sought Federal Government support for the Agge Deep Seaport and the overall development of the state’s blue economy. In response, Oyetola reaffirmed the government’s commitment to leveraging PPP models to ensure the project’s completion.

As a strong advocate for PPPs, the minister has previously highlighted that enhancing port infrastructure aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda—an initiative aimed at fostering innovation, economic growth, and infrastructural development. The ministry is also actively working to attract private sector participation and foreign direct investment to bolster Nigeria’s maritime sector.

The Agge Deep Seaport is expected to drive multi-billion-naira investments into Bayelsa, further cementing its status as a key maritime hub. Notably, Bayelsa is the first coastal state in Nigeria to establish a dedicated Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

Similarly, ministry sources indicate that the PPP approach will be utilized in the development of other proposed deep seaport projects across the country.
