China will impose a 15% tariff on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal imports from the U.S. in response to American tariffs, Beijing’s Ministry of Finance announced on Tuesday.
A 10% tariff will also apply to U.S. oil and agricultural machinery imports, with the measures taking effect on February 10.
Additionally, China has launched an antitrust investigation into U.S. tech giant Google.
Meanwhile, U.S. tariffs of 10% on all Chinese imports were set to take effect early Tuesday, following an order by President Donald Trump on Saturday. While Trump also announced tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods, these were postponed for a month after last-minute agreements with both countries—no such deal was reached with China.
On Monday, Trump stated that negotiations with Chinese officials would occur within 24 hours.
Trump, who won the November presidential election on a platform of strong trade policies, previously imposed multiple tariffs during his first term from 2017 to 2021.
