‘Death Row Robbers’: FG Orders Probe Of Okere Prisons Officials

The federal government has ordered an immediate investigation into officials following reports that a four-man gang of inmates at Okere Custodial Centre, Warri, Delta State, was involved in a recent robbery in Benin City, Edo State.

In a statement on Tuesday, Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, directed a “comprehensive probe into allegations of criminal activities within Okere Correctional Centre, Warri, Delta State, recently reported in the media.”

His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Babatunde Alao, stated that the minister strongly condemned the alleged misconduct and warned that any form of indiscipline would attract severe consequences.

“I will not allow indiscipline to fester under my nose. Any officer found wanting will face the full weight of the law. The leadership of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) must provide explanations,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

The Minister reiterated his commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the administration of justice within correctional service system.

“We take these allegations seriously and will not tolerate any form of misconduct within our correctional facilities,” he added.

The minister urged the public to come forward with any relevant information that could assist in the investigation.

According to reports, the robbery took place on January 3, 2025, when a group of assailants stole valuable items from a young man and transferred N4 million to an online bank account during the attack.

Police officers traced the suspects to the custodial facility, but only one of the robbers, who is on death row, was allegedly released by prison officials.
