The Nigerian police charged a certain man by name Abdullahi Sani, 35-years and his girlfriend Sarah Paul, 20-years of age with housebreaking, criminal conspiracy, theft, and mischief, contrary to sections 58, 332, 270 and 312 of the Kaduna State Penal Code. The case was further taken up by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, who reportedly jailed Sani, and his girlfriend, Sarah, for stealing 64 chickens.
Magistrate Michael Bawa, in his ruling, sentenced Mr. Abdullahi to 3 years and 2 months in a correctional facility, and Sarah got 1 year and a month for her role of conspiracy to crime.
Magistrate Bawa in his ruling also ordered the accused to pay N600, 000 while his accomplice pays N200, 000 as compensation to the complainant as applied by the prosecution. The Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Esther Bishen had initially told the court that one Hilary Garba had earlier reported the theft on the 21st Of May.
Bishen said the complainant alleged that the convicts broke into his house at night and stole 64 layers valued at N781, 970. The prosecution said that Paul was arrested while cooking some of the chickens. She noted that the police recovered other items which were suspected to have been stolen. Items recovered from the accused at the point of arrest: cell phones, a television set, generator, mattresses, amplifier, and rug carpets.
When the charges were read to them, they both pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.
The prosecutor thereafter prayed the court to try them summarily in line with section 125 (8) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
