The Abia State House of Assembly has urged the state government through the relevant agencies to immediately carry out the directive of the Governor to begin palliative work on the entire stretch of the dilapidated Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road.
The State Assembly also urged the students and residents of Ikwuano local government area of the state to remain calm and go about their businesses while it wait for the Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and the state government to carry out immediate palliative on the stretch of the road.
The House made its position known after receiving presentation of a matter of urgent public importance by the member representing Ikwuano State Constituency, Hon Emmanuel Nwabuisi, on the dangers posed by the dilapidated road during its plenary on Wednesday.
This follows the recent protest by the students of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia State, against the sorry state of the federal road which led to a fatal accident that killed a 500 level student of the institution by a trailer driver.
It was gathered that the protesting students of the university demanded immediate repair of the road in order to halt the pains the people face while plying the said road.
However, the Abia State House of Assembly, during its plenary resolved and invited the State Commissioner of Works on thursday, to ascertain the plan by the Ministry on how best they would carry out the directive of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on the bad road.
The house further mandated its representative on Works to visit the road immediately to assess it’s state.
Meanwhile, the member representing Ikwuano State Constituency, Hon Emmanuel Nwabuisi has lamented that the condition of the road has hindered economic activities in the area, and as well as worsened the meager income earning capacity of the people of Ikwuano local area.
The lawmaker also regretted that the sorry state of the Umuahia-Ikwuano-Ikot Ekpene expressway has led to several deaths with the lastest involving a final year student of the department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike who was crushed by a trailer.
