UGHELLI — Sunday in Agbarho Kingdom in Ughelli North LGA, Delta State saw the sporadic firing of rifles at the palace of the Osuivie of Agbarho, His Royal Majesty, Samson Ogugu, and then the ensuing escape of the Osuivie from the clutches of the armed men who charged at his royal home that afternoon.
No one had heard any report from him until recently. Speaking from an intentionally undisclosed location in the heart of Warri, the Osuivie spoke vehemently, embittered by the turn of events. His anger was not only at the attempt made at his life, but also at the fact that people have begun to believe the rumour that he was removed and a new ruler was installed early on today (Monday).
He described his version of events to Waffi TV reporters, stating, “Some persons wanted me dead, so that they can install a new king who will be taking authority from them. I have not committed any offence against any individual or the kingdom. But few cabals led by General E.O Obada (Rtrd) want me dead at all cost.
“They sent assassins to kill me in broad daylight with guns. They shot sporadically into the air in my palace. But my God helped me escape from their hands.
‘‘I left my palace 30 minutes earlier, acting on information received from intel before the arrival of the gunmen. They beat up my policemen, including my children. Some of them threatened to shoot at my son.
‘‘They carted away my costly royal beads worth N4million. From what my wife told me, the gunmen ransacked and carted away unquantifiable millions of nairas.’
The Osuivie continued, “Nobody has the monopoly of violence and if I respond to their rascality in equal measure, the whole Agbarho town will run. And I don’t want to do that because I am a man of peace.
‘‘I am calling on the Delta state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Commissioner of Police and President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene immediately in the matter and arrest anybody behind the palace coup, attempting to kill and overthrow a government, targeting a king at gunpoint.
‘‘It is a pity that the police in Agbarho have compromised and while my palace was overtaken by the gunmen, the Police was celebrating my palace invasion with the gunmen and their masterminds.”
However, unconfirmed reports have it that one Chief William Onokpite has been installed on Monday evening at the palace as the new monarch of Agbarho kingdom by the opposition force amidst tight security.
The Agbarho people can only but watch and act to the limit of their powers now to ensure that the ruckus does not blow up more than it has already.
