War: Biden To visit Israel Wednesday As Gaza Ground Invasion Looms

President Joe Biden will travel to Israel on Wednesday as a sign of support for the nation following a deadly attack by Hamas, which comes amidst the imminent ground invasion of Gaza by Israeli forces.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the trip during his visit to Israel, where he had extensive meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Biden’s visit to Tel Aviv will also include a stop in Amman, the capital of Jordan, where he will meet with Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II. The invitation for Biden’s visit came from Netanyahu after a conversation on Saturday.

Although Biden’s presence is meant to demonstrate strong U.S. support in the wake of Hamas’s attack, there is concern about the trip happening during a potentially volatile phase in the ongoing conflict. The White House noted that Biden has undertaken daring trips before, such as his visit to Kyiv in February during Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.

However, this trip to Israel may pose greater risks. In February, there was no agreement between the U.S. and Israel to halt a ground invasion of Gaza while Biden is in Israel. It’s worth noting that Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States.

“We are not dictating military terms and operational mandates to the Israeli military,” he told reporters Monday night.

Kirby emphasized that the President wouldn’t embark on this journey without ensuring robust security measures. Nevertheless, the decision to undertake the visit was made swiftly, within 48 hours of Netanyahu extending the invitation to Biden.

Furthermore, two U.S. vessels, the USS Bataan and Carter Hall, each carrying a substantial complement of Marines, are in transit from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean. They will join an existing fleet of ships in the region, including two aircraft carriers.

In addition to President Biden’s visit, New York Governor Kathy Hochul also announced her upcoming trip to Israel, with the announcement made on Monday night.

“Tomorrow, I’ll be travelling to Israel for a solidarity mission where I plan to meet with diplomatic leaders and communities who have been devastated by the horrific Hamas attacks,” Hochul said.
