Aston Villa boss, Steven Gerrard has slammed referee, Simon Hooper, for stopping his side’s victory over Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday.
It was a mistake from Hooper that cost Aston Villa a potential win over Manchester City.
Steven Gerrard’s side put up a brave resistance against Pep Guardiola’s men and were heading for their first win of the session but for the referee’s decision.
Manchester City took the lead, thanks to the free-scoring Erling Haaland, but the home side levelled proceedings through Leon Bailey.
Philippe Coutinho then scored a stunner from outside the box, but only after Hooper had blown his whistle for a strange offside call by the linesman and VAR was not called in to review the decision.
Replays clearly showed that the attacking midfielder was in fact onside.
Linesmen are meant to delay their flagging for offside due to the introduction of VAR, in the eventuality that the play leads to a goal and they have made the incorrect call.
But that was not the case in the Villa game against Manchester City. And the goal was not reviewed because the referee’s whistle had sounded before Coutinho fired in.
Angered by this mistake by the official, Gerrard told reporters after the game, “He [Hooper] blew the whistle too early twice. He blew the whistle when Ezri Konsa challenged Ederson.
“Why blow the whistle? Why not wait and use VAR if there is an issue? And he blew the whistle too early for Phil’s thing.
“He was desperate on the whistle which went against us twice in the game. I saw a legitimate goal but obviously I am biased.”
