Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court on Monday granted bail in the sum of ₦2 billion to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The bail was granted following Emefiele’s arraignment on an eight-count charge, which includes allegations of unlawfully acquiring a housing estate comprising 753 units, and misappropriating billions of naira through proxy accounts.
In his ruling, Justice Yusuf acknowledged that Emefiele had previously been granted bail in three other pending criminal cases, with no evidence that he had violated any of the bail terms.
He therefore granted the bail on the condition that Emefiele presents two sureties, each of whom must own property valued at ₦2 billion in either Asokoro, Maitama, or Wuse 2, all within the court’s jurisdiction.
Justice Yusuf further directed Emefiele to deposit his travel documents with the court and ordered that the bail conditions must be met by Wednesday, or he would be remanded in custody.
The ruling followed a bail application moved by Emefiele’s lawyer, Matthew Burkaa, which was not opposed by prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, although the latter requested the imposition of additional bail conditions.
